Patrick McKee

AI systems for real businesses, built on 27 years of web and IT work.

I build AI systems that run inside real businesses: phone agents that answered 1,700+ calls and booked 133 appointments for a two-state roofing company, back-office automation for the same client, and local models on hardware I own. The AI is the new part. The rest is 27 years of sitting with business owners, learning how their work actually runs, and keeping their systems up. I ran my own IT and web company for nearly 13 years, built the Indiana National Guard's public sites as a cleared contractor, and co-founded an AI startup as its CTO. Industries I know from the inside: roofing and insurance claims, home builders and contractors, medical offices, retail, country clubs and government. The full record, back to the Flash sites I sold in high school, is below.

1,700+inbound calls to AI phone agents I built1,736 connected inbound calls in the call export, 10/30/2025 to 02/28/2026; the AI spoke on about 1,500.
133appointments booked by the AI on live callsBooking records, 10/30/2025 to 02/27/2026.
27years building for the webMy earliest dated web page is from 02/1999; first paid web job 10/1999.
Nearly 13years running my own IT and web companyBought Kind Technology Solutions 12/2013; QuickBooks invoices in every year since.
About 80paying clients since 2013QuickBooks customers with a real invoice, with household and duplicate accounts merged.
1,000+on-site client visits1,084 trip charges on QuickBooks invoices, 12/2013 to 08/2026.
45 minmedian reply to a new client request634 client requests in my work mailbox, mostly 2014 to 2018; 78 percent answered the same day.
45+websites built or rebuilt since 2000Counted site by site from the work on this page and dated records; 30+ were new builds.

Where this points

Twenty-seven years of the same loop: listen to a business, build the thing, keep it running, answer the phone when it breaks. That loop is exactly what AI systems need wrapped around them now. These are the lanes where the record above says I would do well, with the evidence for each.

1,000+ on-site visits and a 45 minute median reply time. The job is sitting with a customer, finding the real workflow and shipping something that runs in their building on Monday. I have done that for 13 years without the AI part, and for the last two with it.

Voice and phone agents

VAPI, Retell AI, Twilio and CallRail in production, plus Whisper and Kokoro running locally. Small businesses live on the phone. An agent that books, qualifies and hands off to a human is the first AI most of them will ever buy, and I have already built and sold them.

Written as a partnership, not a hand-off. The tools write code and answer questions. Somebody still has to know the client, own the outcome and be reachable.

Where I would not lead: model research and training from scratch, and pure software engineering teams that never meet a customer. The record is applied, not academic.

Bot Games 2026: an open-source-only AI agent competition

AI Implemented Inc

Problem. Show what open-source models can do when builders compete head to head, with no paid APIs allowed.

What I did.

  • Designed the contest: every competitor gets the same prepared virtual machine and four hours to build, then bots face rounds for effectiveness, adaptability and durability under attack.
  • Built the launch: the botgames.io site, rules and FAQ pages, a press kit, ads, a Reddit campaign and outreach to AI Discord communities.
  • Set up uptime and security monitoring and privacy-friendly visitor analytics.

Outcome. 941 visitors and 25 registrations from 52 countries in the first weeks, before I cancelled the event ahead of the start.

Back-office automation for the same roofing client

Superior One Roofing

Problem. Leads, insurance claim paperwork and sales follow-up all ran on manual effort.

What I did.

  • Automated multi-day voice and SMS follow-up for new leads, with reliable opt-out detection.
  • Insurance claims pipeline: inbox monitoring, AI extraction, fuzzy matching against CRM jobs, a human approval screen and CRM write-back; one model switch cut the estimated model cost per email about 7 times at list price.
  • A sales follow-up dashboard that reads CRM activity and flags prospects that need attention.
  • Zip-code proximity routing and same-day dispatch services.

Outcome. About 80,000 lines of Node.js across 42 services, running in production.

24/7 AI phone receptionist for a two-state roofing company

Superior One Roofing, Florida and Texas

Problem. Callers were hanging up before anyone could book them.

What I did.

  • Shipped the first generation on Retell AI, then rebuilt it on VAPI as CallLayer.
  • Wrote 13-tool MCP servers the agent calls mid-conversation: availability, booking, address verification, caller history, SMS, with business rules enforced in code.
  • Precomputed calendar availability into PostgreSQL every 20 minutes, so slot searches on live calls returned in a median 0.39 seconds.
  • LLM failover with health checks on the Claude-based agents, falling back to GPT-4o.
  • Post-call classification, spam scoring and AI summaries written into the AccuLynx CRM.
  • Florida and Texas as isolated stacks under one monitoring dashboard; daily dumps, off-site backups, restore verified.

Outcome. 1,736 connected inbound calls in the call export from 10/30/2025 to 02/28/2026, and 133 appointments booked by the AI on live calls. 239 callers were handed live to staff, and 150+ after-hours calls were covered.

Twelve years as the IT department for a three-store hardware retailer

White's Ace Hardware and Garden Center

Problem. Three stores full of registers, printers, scanners, email and Wi-Fi, and no one on staff who owned any of it.

What I did.

  • Took the account over in December 2013 and became the person every store called: registers, paint-matching systems, label printers, RF guns, time clocks, Wi-Fi.
  • General point of sale network, Microsoft 365 and backup support for all three stores, 2014 to 2026, including the Windows 10 rollout on registers and office PCs.
  • Fixed the time clocks at all three stores after a certificate change and kept paint software and dispensers on their quarterly updates.
  • When their legacy competitor-price tool died in 2016, tracked down its original programmer for a fix; in 2022 replaced it for good by comparing price-monitoring vendors, trimming the shopped list from about 3,900 items to a starter set, and moving them to a monthly service.
  • Ran their monthly email blasts, print coupons and QR sign-up landing pages, and documented the co-op ad funding claims so the vendor program paid for them.
  • Wrote the owners a priority IT roadmap in 2018.
  • Replaced the WordPress site in 2018.
  • 2020 to 2022: cloned the store PCs onto SSDs, swapped in new back-room machines, kept the paint-tint systems and spectrophotometers licensed and talking, set up store music and digital signage.
  • Ran a heavy managed-IT retainer through 2025 and 2026.
  • 2024: moved registers and ran new network cable when one store was reworked, and planned the next PC replacements.
  • Documented every system in March 2026 and handed it off cleanly to their next provider.

Probi: race control and video routing for HDZero digital FPV

Problem. Running a digital FPV race means juggling goggles, a video box, channels and a race timer with no single screen that shows it all.

What I did.

  • Wrote a local-first race-control app: it talks to the HDZero Box Pro and Goggle 2 over SSH, pulls their RTSP video into a browser preview, switches channels and sources, and lays four pilots out on one race wall.
  • Mapped it to the LiveTime race timer and added a switchable RF race monitor (tinySA and an SDR) to watch the band in use.
  • Packaged it as a phone app with Capacitor, and experimented with a 720p120 low-latency mode in the Box Pro firmware source.

Version 1 runs on my own box; the code is in a private repository.

What I did.

  • Earned the FAA Remote Pilot certificate (Part 107) on 07/26/2019, after flying FPV drones since 2015.
  • Shot and edited drone video for clients from 2015 to 2025: a crane tree removal for Xanderbuilt, a wedding, and a building-wrap project for ShadowGraphix filmed outside and in a single take inside, delivered edited, color graded and in HDR.
  • The building-wrap footage went into the client's website, social clips and a trade magazine submission with a drone footage credit.

Founded and ran a MultiGP drone racing chapter: IndyFPV, later Indy GP

What I did.

  • Opened the chapter with MultiGP on 11/19/2015 and organized it for 45 months, through 08/2019.
  • 174 pilots joined. Put 14 race and fun-fly days on the MultiGP calendar, including The Indy 5 at the AMA headquarters field in Muncie.
  • Hosted a 2019 MultiGP Championship Global Qualifier doubleheader and an official Mid-America Throwdown qualifier in 08/2019.
  • Raced too: about 95 race entries at events run by 16 other Midwest chapters, 2016 to 2020, and flew demos at Conner Prairie's Festival of Machines on 09/16/2018.

Outcome. 174 pilots joined the chapter I started from nothing.

Founded the Indianapolis Virtual Reality Meetup

Problem. Consumer VR was arriving in 2015 and Indianapolis had no place for developers and curious people to try headsets and talk shop.

What I did.

  • Started the group in fall 2015 ('the first meetup in Indy') and hosted the meetups, including sessions at the Launch Fishers coworking space.
  • Brought Gear VR, then Oculus Rift CV1 and HTC Vive demos as the hardware shipped.
  • Ran a joint session with the Indianapolis developers association on virtual and augmented reality.

  • Ran beta builds of the Vireio Perception stereo driver on it in 04/2013, a DK2 beta in 08/2015, and gave feedback to indie VR developers.
  • Posted the first VR videos on my channel in 04/2013, and later mixed-reality Beat Saber captures with a Kinect v2 and no green screen.

What I did.

  • Built the WordPress site under contract in October 2012.

  • Ran their MailChimp campaigns and split the list by region so Florida and Midwest stores got their own mail, and added the store address CAN-SPAM requires.

IT, web, SEO and marketing for an AV integrator

Digitech Custom Audio and Video, Carmel, Indiana

Problem. A growing install business with no technical policies, a dated web presence and marketing done by hand.

What I did.

  • Ran IT for the office and the field crews, wrote the technical policies and field guides.
  • Supported the installers' homeowner customers directly: home networks and Wi-Fi, file recovery, email setup. Evaluated proposal and inventory software for the company at the 2011 CEDIA trade show and built the sales pipeline reports.
  • Built and ran the company website twice: a Joomla site with the newsletter sign-up and product spotlights, then a full rebuild in WordPress on Divi by 2016 with a home theater slideshow and service tiles. Ran SEO, Salesforce and HubSpot, social media and print design, and designed the company's van fleet wrap.
  • Stayed on as a client of my company through 2018: moved their email marketing from Revenew to Netsertive, built the dynamic landing page and verified Google Tag Manager, set up call tracking, restructured the site and fixed its broken links and form spam, recovered data from a failed drive.

Outcome. Lower costs and new revenue from the web; the role turned into my own company at the end of 2013. A 30-day search ad push in 2015 that I ran and reported on brought 205 site visits, 9 conversions and 7 phone calls.

Public websites for the Indiana National Guard, Camp Atterbury and Muscatatuck

Indiana National Guard, via Quantum Dynamics, Inc.

Problem. Dozens of legacy hand-coded HTML sites, no central publishing, and every page bound by Department of Defense and Army web policy.

What I did.

  • Set up and ran six named sites on DotNetNuke, including Camp Atterbury and the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center.
  • Converted the legacy HTML into the CMS with a custom approval workflow so Public Affairs signed off before anything went live.
  • Wrote the training agenda and tutorials and trained staff at two centers.
  • Worked with security and the network operations center on hosting and policy.
  • Sourced and qualified an independent video provider that could carry their bandwidth and meet regulatory requirements.

Outcome. One CMS, one approval chain, and staff publishing their own content.

Rebuilt from Internet Archive captures: each site's home page and about ten inner pages survived, some images and styles did not, so the Muscatatuck menu shows fully expanded. Links to pages that were never archived are switched off.

  • In early 2003 resized the top frame and menu for 800x600 screens, fixed links, added the artist request forms with form validation, and added a jazz club page with its dinner menu.

The artists' full-length tracks are left out of this copy, so the players are silent. Rescued in 2026 from my own 2005 backup of my old graphics drive.

Odyssey Quest: a site for an event management and market development firm

Odyssey Quest, event management and market development services

What I did.

  • Designed and built the site from a sliced Photoshop layout: the Odyssey Quest logo, a testimonial banner that changes per page, a Home, Why Odyssey Quest, Our Services, Clients and Client Login bar, and each page's content in a framed panel.
  • Gave each page its own photo and tagline, from a green chair on 'Your quest begins here' to a conference room on 'Where meetings come alive'.

Testimonial names are painted out of this copy. Rescued in 2026 from my own 2005 backup of my old graphics drive.

IndianaLawInfo.com: a law firm site with a fly-out practice area menu

Westerfield & Associates, Attorneys at Law, Indianapolis (indianalawinfo.com)

What I did.

  • Built the firm's site under an Indianapolis skyline header with blue and orange swooshes, the IndianaLawInfo.com logo ('Where Smart Hoosiers Come For Law Info') and a contact panel with the firm's phone, fax and 24-hour answering service.
  • Laid out nine practice area pages under a fly-out Legal Services menu, from litigation, business and family law to bankruptcy, wills and trusts, real estate and tax, plus contact and disclaimer pages and an Ask the Attorney e-mail button.

The same client as MPower Management Solutions; the 'Advisory Business Council' credit in the footer is that company's earlier name. The attorney's biography page is left out of this copy. Rescued in 2026 from my own 2005 backup of my old graphics drive.

Disco Limo: an all-Flash site for a party limousine company, rebuilt three times

Disco Limo, Indiana

What I did.

  • 2001: designed and animated the whole site in Flash: a disco-ball and dance-floor intro, illustrated limos, Rates, Themes and Contact sections, and looping music with an on/off control.
  • 2003: rebuilt the front page in Flash MX; this version was live on disco-limo.com in 2004, per the Internet Archive.
  • 2005: reworked it again with a Themes section of 28 party packages in a scrolling list with photo slides, plus Rates, Events and Merchandise links.

All three versions rescued in 2026 from my own 2001 and 2005 backup discs.

My first personal site: a Flash front door that stayed at Coming Soon

My own site

What I did.

  • Designed my own portfolio front door in summer 2001: a Flash interface with a Main, Portfolio, Profile, Vision and Contact menu of little cartoon heads and a music on/off switch.
  • Posted it as a Coming Soon page while the sections were being built.

The Indiana Heart Hospital: a Flash intro and Flash site for a new heart hospital

The Indiana Heart Hospital, Indianapolis

What I did.

  • Animated the Flash intro: a turning heart inside a dotted target that ends on the hospital's logo, with a skip button.
  • Built the Flash site around an architect's rendering of the new building, with a tabbed menu that loads each section as its own movie: a fact sheet in a scrolling panel, a contact page with zoomable aerial maps, a virtual tour, an A/V library, a risk appraisal and related links.
  • Modeled the hospital's heart logo in Swift 3D and animated it turning, and made a beating heart animation for the Flash work.

A Vocis Design Group job. The staff, physician and press release panels are left out of this copy because they name people. Rescued in 2026 from my own 2005 backup of my old graphics drive and my June 2001 project CD.

Michiana Hematology Oncology: site mockups, CD artwork and the finished site

Michiana Hematology Oncology, PC

What I did.

  • Five site mockups with interior pages, a forms page and CD label artwork.
  • Built the practice's site from the chosen mockup in spring 2001: a photo-led home menu, sliced navigation with rollover sub-menus, and Locations, Patient Care, Patient Resources, What's New, About Us and Contact Us sections.
  • Made a page for each office location, a cancer resources directory, and insurance, registration and forms pages.

Music Travel Consultants: CD business card, Flash intro and website

Music Travel Consultants and 12-8 Promotions, Indianapolis

Problem. A tour company for school and jazz groups wanted to stand out at trade shows in 2000, when a mailer was paper and a website was optional.

What I did.

  • Designed a CD business card: an autorun Flash presentation with voice-over, music and links that opened the website.
  • Built the Flash intro and the website with tour photos and staff bios, plus the Indy Tours and 12-8 Promotions logos.
  • Set up the site's form autoresponders.

ASA Productions: a music-staff website and Flash intro for a jingle and sound design studio

ASA Productions

What I did.

  • Started with four home page mockups in July 2000, from a red piano-curve layout to a framed 3D panel.
  • Designed the site on a music staff: a scrolling row of notes as the main menu, and a Click Tracks page where each oval thumbnail opens one of the studio's TV and radio spots.
  • Built the studio, client list and what-we-do pages, plus a Flash intro, 'grab your coat and get your hat'.

A Vocis Design Group client. The team, bio, FAQ and contact pages and the audio clips are left out of this copy, so a few menu notes go nowhere and the spot players are empty. Rescued in 2026 from my own 2005 backup of my old graphics drive and my June 2001 project CD.

Ultimate Card / longdistance.com

What I did.

  • Built the animated Flash product demo for Ultimate Card and its pages for Windows and Mac.
  • Built the longdistance.com site around a telephone keypad: each key on the home page opens a section, from Services and Rates and Secure Online Sign Up to Regulatory News, Agent Program, Business Products, Consumer Guide and Contact Us.
  • Made its rate comparison pages, sign-up and referral forms, and separate PC and Mac menu scripts, plus a Flash keypad intro.

Vocis Design Group, Lead Web Developer and Creative Director

Design agency in the Stutz Building, downtown Indianapolis

Problem. Agency clients needed sites designed and shipped on deadline across a wide mix of businesses.

What I did.

  • Led design and development delivery for the agency's client accounts.
  • Built CMS sites in Joomla and Plone, PHP and MySQL back ends, e-commerce carts and HTML email campaigns.
  • Client work there included Music Travel Consultants and 12-8 Promotions, Ultimate Card and longdistance.com, Michiana Hematology Oncology, The Indiana Heart Hospital, Indy Aero, The Willow Group, DedicationTrees.com, Earthtek, Netisun, 101st, ASA Productions, Worldlink Service and Property Group One.
  • Worked on the agency's own site through several designs, including the staff page, plus its logo animations and CD intros.

Outcome. Twenty-five plus client sites delivered as lead developer and creative director.

Logo animations, CD and DVD intros and site intros from the Vocis years survive on the 2001 CD.

3D animation and digital art, before the web work

What I did.

  • Animated a hand in Poser and rendered it out as a short video.
  • Built landscapes in Bryce, including an island fly-by and a mountain carved from my own face.
  • Designed a symmetrical pattern from the letters of my name for art class, then rebuilt it as a 3D scene.
  • Rendered a particle explosion animation with my name on the credits, and hand-built a class web page with a spinning 3D image cube applet for my high-school science teacher.

Outcome. The 3D and design habit that turned into Flash work a year later, and much later into VR.

Flash websites and creative work for hire

Problem. Small businesses and individuals wanted animated sites and graphics and had no one local who could build them.

What I did.

  • Built Flash intros and full Flash sites, logos and web graphics in Flash and Photoshop.
  • A Flash site for a classmate's project, animation experiments, and a portrait and motion pieces for class.
  • Sold the work directly and handled the client relationship myself.

Outcome. The start of a client list that has never fully stopped.

Rescued in 2026 from my own February 2001 backup CD.

Each site recorded as a whole page at its real pixel size, with its sound and the fonts it was designed with, the full intros for Netisun and the Indiana Heart Hospital first, then the BLS Construction loader, then one highlight per site. Each plays inside a browser of its year, Internet Explorer on Windows 98 or XP, or a Mac on OS 9 or OS X. A few small movies are scaled up to fill the window, aspect ratio kept; the rest play at their real size. The working sites are further down the page; the 2001 portfolio CD has its own gallery and reel.
